What is child marriage?

Child marriage is any formal marriage or informal union where one or both of the parties are under 18 years of age. 

Why does child marriage happen?

Child marriage is rooted in gender inequality and the belief that girls and women are somehow inferior to males.

Why is child marriage a problem?

Child brides neither are physically nor emotionally ready to become wives and mothers.

Why do we need to act?

When girls have access to economic opportunities, they can plan a more prosperous future for themselves.

What is the prevalence rate?

34% of girls in Uganda are married before their 18th birthday and a 7% are married before the age of 15.
